Steering Issues

Steering issues or a trolley that veers to one side have come in to us quite regularly and can be caused by the front wheel or side wheels.  We have seen wheels not put back on properly after cleaning thus not engaging with the clutches and left to free wheel causing steering problems and nuts missing from the front axle causing the axle to fall out of its slot and make the front wheel wobbly. We may need to fix a bearing, a clutch or tyre but bring it in for us to find out what is causing your trolley to deviate off line.

A Happy Christmas to you all and we look forward to seeing you in 2014 whether for a service, repair or sale. We will keep posting information and advice on our blogs and videos will continue to be uploaded for you.

Axle Mounts

The axle mounts are located on the left and right side and fixed to the underside of the chassis. They keep the axle in line but because they are made from plastic they are prone to wearing over time and when there is excess play this can put the gearbox under some extra strain and can produce a squeaking noise where the axle rubs on the underside of the battery tray on some trolleys, so check them or get us to check them to ensure that you don’t accrue extra work and cost.

Powakaddy Touch Conversion

We have successfully converted a Powakaddy Touch from its slide action to a straight forward switched potentiometer.
A customer bought in a Powakaddy Touch trolley which had a jammed handle and also no power to the motor. Once stripped down and tested it was found that the control box had blown and further diagnosis showed the trolley would need a new control box and a sliding potentiometer unit…..an expensive repair !!!

After consultation with the customer we agreed that the most cost effective solution would be to fit a new control box and convert the handle to a rigid unit incorporating a standard switched potentiometer.  This conversion not only saved the customer money but then enable the trolley to operate in a standard and more manageable way.

Battery Test

Your battery on your electric golf trolley can be prone to failing ie not lasting 18 holes and sometimes no power at all. Do not presume that the battery is the issue if you experience one of these problems as the charger could be at fault so we at GolfTrolleyGarage offer a battery testing service to get to the route of the problem. We are authorised by the main brands to test your battery on our top of the range testing equipment, we can provide a read out of the results and the battery has a full cycle test to ensure you get the right result. Once we have got our results we can then inform and advise you of the next step and course of action. We can also tell you how to look after your battery and keep it in tip top condition and thus ensure it lasts the maximum amount of time.

We sell batteries and will only use the brands that we think stand up to the rigorous tests of using your trolley on the golf course and offer good value for money, it’s in our interest to make sure you go away with a good product and not keep coming back with faulty ones !!!!

So come and see us or get in contact to find out what we offer.

Motor Bushes

Here is an image of the bushes that would find inside the motor on most electric golf trolleys, Now these are both worn but the one on the left is particularly very worn and this was the cause of an intermittent electrical problem.

Buying an Electric Golf Trolley

Here's some information regarding purchasing a new or replacing an existing trolley particularly as christmas is just around the corner.
There are so many different types of electric golf trolley available these days that it can be quite difficult to know which one to choose. Like a lot of things, a well known brand is better for after sales service and parts as well as quality. We have had experience with trolleys purchased from the internet which have been bought in to us for repair but we have been unable to get spares because they may not have a branding but also because parts are not shipped in great quantity to this country. Then you may have to consider things like a courier to get the trolley repaired then waiting for it to come back  and the time that goes with waiting in for the re-delivery.

You should consider budget, how often you want to use the trolley, how many holes per day you may use the trolley, do you want distance control, remote control, the design and whether you want any accessories to match. Then you can be a little selective with things like weight of the trolley, dimensions, colour or a matching storage bag.

Trolley Will Not Switch Off

Here is another article for you....

If you connect the battery to your trolley, get it running then go out on the course only for it to not switch off due normally to a faulty potentiometer then be quick and dis-connect the battery. This will prevent the trolley going off and causing some damage either to someone else or something but also to the trolley itself. ( It has been known for a trolley to go off and in to a lake……).

This fault has come up a couple of times recently and dis-connecting the power is the preventative measure, you can then get the trolley back to the clubhouse and to your service agent.

Trolley with no power

Here we go for another article regarding a totally dead trolley.

You get your trolley out of the car or van and connect all the parts together, connect the battery and switch it on but nothing. Now there can be a few reasons for this, a broken control box, a faulty potentiometer, a faulty battery, faulty battery wires, a blown fuse or a broken wiring loom. Some of these problems can cause a non running trolley at first switch on but they can also appear to be ok at switch on only for the trolley to cut out and not go some time later.

If you have an issue when your trolley doesn’t go then get it looked at and diagnosed properly.

Lithium Batteries

We are being asked more about lithium batteries recently so here’s a few outline points for you.
Lithium batteries are lighter on a like for like basis when compared with lead acid batteries and in some cases quite considerably.
Lithium batteries when compared like for like with lead acid batteries are generally considerably smaller.
They can provide more power to your trolley.
They will normally have a longer warranty or guarantee and in some cases up to 5 years.
Although they may cost more upfront this will balance out over time when compared with the costs of lead acid batteries.
You will need a new different type of charger if you up grade your battery and there are packs where you buy both the battery and charger together for a slightly reduced rate.

Thank you for reading and please contact us for any questions you may have or any other information you require. Go to the following link to find our address, email and phone number.

If your electric trolley suddenly stops or faulters, it's always a good idea to first check your battery leads plus the connections both on the battery and where they connect to the trolley. If nothing is immediately evident then you will need to get the trolley (and battery) tested and checked.

Lithium Batteries

Lithium batteries may appear expensive, but they have a number of advantages. In simple terms they are much lighter, charge quicker, give added power and come with a longer warranty - some are up to 5 years.
In the long run lithium is a good investment - for more details and prices please contact us.

We will be pleased to supply full details on request.

01 August 2013

During the past few months I've had customers bring in batteries for testing, saying that although only a few months old they are failing before the end of a round.

On several occasions, and when taking the battery out of it's carry bag, the batterys were found to be quite old - and not the battery originally purchased by the customer.

This would indicate the customers battery had been mistakenly switched (or perhaps otherwise).

To safeguard against this, it is a good practice to indelibly mark the outside casing of your battery with your name or some other means of identification. Your trolley and other golf valuables should also be treated in the same way - its better to be safe than sorry.

At last, some better golfing weather.
It is now a good idea to have your battery and charger professioally checked and tested to avoid any possible future problems.

19 February 2013

If you're thinking of buying a second hand trolley then apart from the trolley it's a good idea to first have the battery and charger professionally tested.
These items are quite expensive to replace so it's better to be safe than sorry.

15 February 2013

Don't forget, now is the time to think about havng your electric golf trolley or buggy checked and serviced in readiness for the start of the season.

28 January 2013

I've had a couple of trolleys in recently with completely seized clutches.

The trolleys have both been stored away in a wet condition (without drying them off) within a canvass "trolley carry bag".

If you keep/carry your trolley in one of these useful bags, it's best to first ensure your trolley is as dry as possible.

17 January 2013
