A customer came in complaining that his Hillbilly Compact
Plus was making a ‘terrible’ noise from the gearbox area. We isolated the
problem to the motor which we removed and stripped down and upon examination we
found one of the lugs on the base plate had fractured and sheared off and was
still attached to the motor retaining bolt which screws in to it. Because the
bolt was no longer attached it was hanging freely within the motor and causing
the noise.
The answer to the problem was to thoroughly clean the motor
internals, tap and drill a new thread in to the base plate and re-assemble the
motor with a new and longer retaining bolt.
